Juniors and seniors involved in Link Crew at Greeley West High School are spending their Wednesdays and Fridays making freshman lunch a little more exciting. By hosting games and activities the upperclassmen are helping freshmen feel more connected and comfortable during their first year of high school.
Link Crew is a program designed to support freshmen as they transition into high school. Throughout the year, student leaders organize events that encourage interaction, teamwork, and friendships between all grade levels. On Wednesday, our Link Crew leaders hosted a basketball tournament during freshman lunch, creating a fun environment.
Senior Ella Lopez participated in the tournament alongside her team with freshman Eden Van Elderen, Samming Lanning, and Jaydia Amesquita. The games were competitive, but the goal was to create a core memory for freshmen.
“This helped me connect with younger students by building connections and bonds,” Lopez said. “It helps them come to school and feel more comfortable here with the students.”
The basketball tournament brought energy to the lunch period as freshmen cheered for their classmates. Moments like these are what the Link Crew program is all about.
Lopez also shared that she and her teammates enjoyed the opportunity to interact and play basketball with each other again as they played together in the winter during basketball season.
By continuing to host activities during lunch, Link Crew leaders hope to strengthen the sense of community at Greeley West. Through these simple games they are helping build confidence in their first year of high school.
