Student leadership was on display at Greeley West’s final pep assembly of the year last Friday. In fact, some would say the entire event was a demonstration of the impact students have on their school community.
The most obvious example of student leadership was the Jazz Band, who performed without director and teacher Mr. Keaton Michel. Michel, who was out of the building support students at All-State Band, let his group take center stage in the middle of the assembly without them. The band wowed the crowd with a rendition of “Pressure Cooker” complete with solos from Asher Porter and Jackson Chadwick. For Porter, the trust Michel shows in the group helped the performance seem natural.
“It was nerve racking but it was not that different from our usual performances since we typically play without a conductor,’ Porter said. “The entire jazz band thanks STUCO who gave us the opportunity to perform at the assembly.”
STUCO itself practiced what it preached. Not a single teacher took a microphone. In fact, faculty members graciously participated in activities that were student-generated, student-created, and didn’t always portray them in the greatest light. Mr. Nick Jacoby was one teacher who certainly got some laughs at the assembly as he swung a pool noodle to catch chickens. “It was a phenomenal time and the games were very interactive,” Jacoby said. “I wish I had Cabral to guide me”
The Student Council will host their last event of the year when they host the Student Choice awards in May, which will be another chance to showcase and celebrate students at Greeley West. It, too, will be run by students for students. “It will recognize all students, not just the seniors, even though it is their last day of high school,” STUCO sergeant of arms Hanifa Adam said. “It is built to recognise the Spartans.”
