After a crushing defeat against Windsor with a score of 74-1 last week, the Spartans girls basketball team is determined to bounce back and show their resilience. The defeat, while disheartening, has ignited a fire within the team, pushing them to come out in the end of their next game against their hometown rival, Greeley Central, with a win especially for the seniors’ last year of high school basketball and how they want to leave their legacy tonight at 5:30.
The Spartans had shown improvement before the setback in comparisson to previous seasons and coach Jonathan Bass is well-aware that it takes time. “When you’re building a program, it takes time and it’s not going to happen overnight,” said Bass.
Bass’s goal is to keep winning one or two additional games each year, which seems like a small amount. But that he wants consistent growth as a head coach. Bass is influential in turning this setback into a stepping stone. Senior Lauren DeMeyer said practices have been more focused since the Windsor game. “It’s an overall learning experience. We had two practices in between to figure out what we can do better,” DeMeyer said.
The girls basketball team is in one of the hardest conferences to be in with Windsor being one of the tought teams. For those teams to improve, they’re playing teams across the nation like Texas and Missouri schools.
Bass is just focusing on competing in Colorado. On Tuesday night, the Spartans improved on offense and scored 26 points against Rock Mountain, priming them for a more winable game tonight. The girls want to keep going in an upward direction for the rival game hoping to find their first win in 13 years against Greeley Central.
The goal for the rival game is to win. Although some confidence may have been lost by their previous loss, it is always an exciting time to compete against a crosstown rival. The environment is loud, packed with students and parents, and overall a cool atmosphere to be in. “There’s so much going on that you really do just have to lock in and focus,” mentioned Bass.
