The swim team had a multi-team meet on March 19 with lots of their competitors in their 5A conference.
They dueled Fossil Ridge, Fort Collins, and Poudre which are some of the most difficult teams in their conference. This gave the team a good look at what their chances are at state.
Senior Alex Calhuon competed in the 200 medley relay, 100 fly (individual), 100 breaststroke (individual), and the 400 free relay. His favorite is the 100 breaststroke. “My favorite event is the 100 breaststroke because it is my best event and I am trying to get the state qual time before the end of the season to go to state,” Calhoun explained.
Junior Samuel Sasaki said this was our fastest meet of the year except for state. “There were five teams there, and three of the five teams are arguably the top three teams in our conference. So it was an opportunity to race the three fastest schools in our conference.” Sasaki explained.
Sasaki did not make the state cut this meet but he is not worried. “My times weren’t bad. I just missed the state cut but I’m not worried about because that’s not what I’m training for right now, ”Sasaki explained.
Since the boys swim season is about half way over Sasaki is not training for speed or strength right now, he is training to refine his technique. “I’m already in good shape, so I don’t need to worry about getting in better shape. I just need to make sure I’m fixing my technique by the time state rolls around I’m more efficient in the water, and not just stronger,” Sasaki explained
The CHSAA boys swimming and diving state championship is on May 7 and 8. Cheer on our boys swim team as they approach the state championship.
