This year, Greeley Wests girls wrestling team has qualified for the 2025 Douglas County Tiara Girls Wrestling tournament. This will be the 6th time that Douglas county is hosting the Varsity Tiara Girls Wrestling Tournament. The Tiara Challenge, challenges girls wrestlers in one of the most competitive wrestling tournaments in Colorado.
The Top 25 nationally ranked high schools are invited to compete in the Tiara Tournament on January 17th and 18th in Castle Rock, CO at Douglas County High School. In this tournament wrestlers will be rewarded with Custom Tiara headpieces for each tournament champion. Trophies will also be provided for 1st and 2nd place and an Outstanding Wrestler Award.
These girls will participate in various weight classes to be partnered up with the person they will be competing against. This will be a 64-man or 32-man competing in an individually bracketed tournament.
Greeley West’s wrestling team is coming into the tournament with determination and sportsmanship in promises to have a thrilling competition. “Hopefully we will place well as a team. In our last tournament we wrestled and we placed third as a team,” coach Shawn Briggs said.
These wrestlers are working hard to build up a name for themselves from hard work and dedication. Though the sport focuses more individually on the mat, the girls work hard to help their fellow team members out. It’s important to keep a strong bond with your teammates to keep a healthy environment on and off the mat. “Just going in with a positive mindset, and if my opponent has a better record, just to try and take it to my advantage,” freshman Serenity Newton said.
Wrestling in a national tournament means that girls are coming in with expectations on how they want to come in and out of this tournament. Creating goals and expectations is a way to help these girls go above and beyond to be able to reach their goals. “I expect to win that crown because of how well I’ve been doing in these last tournaments,” Esperanza Rios mentioned.
With these high expectations coming in for the girls, the Tiara Wrestling Tournament is more than just a competition for these athletes. It’s important to remember that it’s a celebration of success for young female athletes in the sport of wrestling and achievements they have made throughout their season.
