On January 24th, Greeley West’s boys wrestling team faced crosstown rivals, Greeley Central and Riverdale Ridge. Each wrestler put up an amazing performance and pulled together a win against Riverdale Ridge and Central. Each match showcased every athlete’s strengths and weaknesses.
Starting off the duals each wrestler competing has three rounds, with each round being two minutes long. During these six minutes, these wrestlers use all their energy in hopes to pin their opponent. Greeley West’s wrestling team makes sure that they understand that confidence is better than cockiness for each dual or tournament.
One of these victories that was achieved after the duals was senior Julian Chaves who was awarded MVP at the end of the night. Chaves proved to his coaches and his fellow teammates that his outstanding wrestling skills and hard work in and out of practice lead him to achieving a goal of getting nominated for MVP. “It was a really good feeling to see all of my seniors win it and then it finally got to me, that all of my hard work actually paid off,” Chaves said.
Other proud achievements were made during the wrestling season. Achievements of growth and commitment of wanting to get better. A player taking in advice from coaches of confidence over cockiness. This confidence was shown during the duals and came out with outstanding wins portraying his growth during the wrestling season. “Moving to varsity was way more experience and difference,” junior Gio Portales said.
Ending the night with wrestling the cross town rivals Greeley Central, head coach Joseph Martinez was proud of how his team had wrestled and is preparing them for their upcoming practices for a good room of improvement to help prepare them for bigger challenges in the rest of the wrestling season. “We got after it and did what we needed to do, and needed some work technically,” said Martinez.
