The Greeley West cheer team took home a first place trophy last weekend at their annual Sweetheart Blast that they host as their last competition of the cheerleading season, setting their reputation as one of the best cheer teams in the community.
There were several sections such as Traditional, 2A/3A Gameday, 4A/5A Gameday, 2A/3A Co-ed, and 4A/5A Co-ed. The event was held in the West gym, highlighting fierce competition where they competed in the 4A/5A Gameday division. West delivered a thrilling, high energy perofrmance with stunts and movement sequences, earning them first place in the division going up against six other teams.
“A key factor that led to our success is how much we practice because we don’t let good be enough and we try to go beyond that,” said senior captian Mariana Enriquez.
The squad’s execution and spirited performance impressed the judges and the crowd which secured them the victory. “I think the energy we brought and the sharpness of everybody hitting their steps is what helped us,” mentioned junior Angelica Rivera.
Enriquez mentioned that having this win helped the team bond together more because quite a few of the team is not proceeding forward next year due to internships or other events.
This Sweetheart Blast victory led them to more than two years of winning the competition in a row, and the team will now set their sights on preparing for the upcoming season next school year.
“It felt exciting to be able to know that all the hard work actually paid off,” said freshmen Maritza Torres.
