The Greeley West boys tennis team looks to build on the momentum of their city championship last Friday as they move forward with the rest of their season.
They won the tournament by defeating University, Greeley Central, and Northridge, winning 19 of the 21 matches. Most impressively, the Spartans went 12-0 in doubles.
Tennis coach Ryan Pace was excited about the Spartans’ performance, especially after losing their first match of the year. However, he still wants the team to stay focused and build upon this performance.
“I was very pleased with how the guys performed,” Pace said. “We didn’t play poorly in our first match, but we didn’t go to the expectation that I know that we all have in what we can do.”
Pace acknowledged the local teams won’t be the Spartans’ toughest competition this year. “They may not be the powerhouse that some of the other teams we’ll play are, but they’re good enough to beat you if you don’t take care of your business,” Pace explained.
After these performances, Pace is excited for the rest of the season. “I feel great. Our teams are going to be very competitive this year, which is exciting,” Pace said.
Pace is excited about the younger players too who are not yet on the varsity. He sees a program that is being built one step at a time.
“I think one of my favorite things is that we had a team dinner the other night and every single guy was there, Pace said. “It doesn’t matter if you’re the best player or you’re just learning. And I’m really excited because this team is going to grow together.”
The Spartans next challenge will be in the Greeley West Tennis Invitational this weekend. West will play matches at the school and at Centennial Park.
