Today, the 26th-seeded Greeley West softball team traveled to 6th-seeded Legend High School to battle in a strong first round of regionals. West is 14-10, which was enough to send them to the postseason for the fourth straight year.
The Spartans came into the season with modest expectations, with head coach Hanna Rivera saying, “If you talked to a lot of people, Greeley West softball was not slated to make a regional appearance this year and they proved everyone wrong.”
West, led by freshman pitcher Amaya Cron, may have surprised even themselves. “I’m very excited because I didn’t think we were going to make it this far,” said Cron.
West has exceptional stats on both offense and defense, with a batting average of .408 compared to the national average of .319, and a batting average against of .238 compared to the national average of .304
West is coming off a tough loss to 8-14-1 Fossil Ridge, where they lost 19-8. But junior shortstop and centerfielder Hayden Atchley is looking ahead anyway. We have worked so hard these last two weeks making sure we are prepared for this weekend,” Atchley explained.
When finally reaching the goal of the postseason, emotions were high with coach Rivera saying, “The biggest emotion was pride. I’m just proud of each and every one of these girls on our team. This year hasn’t been easy by any means. In a lot of aspects, they’ve really just shown their grit and resilience.”
The future of Greeley West Softball may not be set in stone, but the pages of the history books are ready to be written in. “We are a super young team and the underclassmen bring so much light to our program and so so so many smiles,” added Atchley
