Greeley West senior Cody Gesick has officially committed to continue his track career at Nebraska Wesleyan University, and his pathway to get there shows just how hardworking and determined he is. Between school, work, and training, Gesick says that the key to balancing everything is simple, time management. “You have to set aside a set amount of time to do training,” he said. “If not, it doesn’t get done.”
Gesick first connected with Nebraska Wesleyan during a summer track meet where he talked with the coaches and immediately felt their support. He chose the university because they showed a strong interest in him and he enjoyed the atmosphere and campus when he visited. Going D3 also means he can compete without the pressure of an athletic scholarship, which helps him run for his own motivation.
One of Gesick’s accomplishments he’s most proud of is overcoming a hip injury he went through during his sophomore year. The setback taught him to appreciate the sport more and helped him grow both as an athlete and a person.
Track coach Tristen VanGilder saw his growth firsthand. He talked about how Gesick stepped up as a leader, especially during his junior year, setting the tone for the team and pushing himself and others to improve. Gesick’s hard work showed on the track, earning him new personal records and helping build his team.
As Gesick prepares for college track, his coach believes he will succeed. With his passion, work ethic, and leadership, Gesick is ready for the next level and exited to meet his new teammates and continue doing what he loves.
