Last Wednesday night, the Greeley West wrestling team celebrated Senior Night, honoring the dedication, grit, and leadership of its graduating athletes. Teammates, classmates, teachers, and families filled the stands to recognize the seniors who have spent years representing the school on the mat.
Before the match, each senior was announced and got to walk out with their family or loved ones. The coaches highlighted some of their moments that they have contributed to the team.
For many seniors, wrestling has been about more than just wins and losses. Senior Gio Portales reflected on the mental toughness the sport helped build.“Wrestling taught me that whenever I’m really doubting myself, you should never quit. You may be feeling that way now, but in the long run, it’ll help you,”stated Portales.
When asked about his favorite match, Portales pointed to the West-Central match last season. “It was my favorite match because I got a really cool move, I even got a really good picture of my tongue out,” stated Portales.
Losses were just as influential as wins. Portales explained, “Don’t stick on it too long, or else it’ll just drag you into the next match,” stated Portales.
For senior Trevor Mills, wrestling has shaped his mindset and character. He shared how the sport helped him through difficult moments. “It has taught me dedication and the want to always be better. It has helped me to always believe in myself,” stated Mills.
When asked what he will miss most, the answers were about team bonding. “Staying in the hotels with the boys… and I will miss the team bonding and friendships I have made. And of course getting Raising Cane’s with my team,” stated Mills.
The wrestling team also honored seniors Tagen Becher, Leon De La Fuente, Micah Gomez and Max Castellanos.
The Spartans are 4-1 in their dual season so far. Their next duals are tomorrow and Friday on the road at Brush and Riverdale Ridge.
