Last week, Greeley West started their preseason track workouts to train for their season in the spring. The team hosts practices in the weight room after school 4-5:30.
The workouts include weight lifting and running laps around the school called ‘Dietz Laps’, which is a lap around the indoor track, a trip up and down the stairs, and a run through the hallway called the spine, named after our very own teacher and coach Mr. Ky Dietz. Junior and returning captain Kairo Ibarra-Ruiz described the workouts as “Lots of core, squats, arms, basically an all around workout.”
Coach Tyler Logan referred to it as a “testing model. We’re basically seeing kid’s baseline athletic ability, and then we’ll kind of repeat and test them to see if what we’re doing is giving them progress or not.”
The team has had a great turnout of kids including returning athletes and a big group of freshmen. “I would say we have a, primarily, a big swing this year of freshman, which is really good overall for our track program.” said Logan. “They are all eager and willing to work hard.”
Some athletes are feeling a little nervous heading into the season. “I just need more preparation going forward,” said junior Esther Garcia-Palacios.
Others are excited and can’t wait for this winter sports season to finish. “Everybody’s pretty happy I would say during these workouts. The overall mood is pretty positive.” said Ibarra-Ruiz.
