Thie week, Greeley West High School interviewed for the athletic director position. Students and staff have shared what they think is important for this role. The athletic director is in charge of all sports programs, including scheduling games, finding referees, and making sure everything runs smoothly.
Boys soccer coach Jorge Cabral said organization is one of the most important qualities. “We have a lot of sports and events,” he explained. “The athletic director needs to know what’s going on at all times.” Being able to stay organized helps make sure practices, games, and travel all go as planned.
Cabral also said he wants someone who is proud of the school. Even though Greeley West may not always be a top team, he believes it is important to have someone who supports the athletes and represents the school with pride. “I want someone who really cares about West,” he said.
When asked about what matters more, winning or how athletes are treated, Cabral said treating athletes well is more important. He believes a good athletic director should build strong relationships with students and check in with them regularly. This shows they care about more than just wins and losses.
Cabral also shared some red flags to watch for during interviews. He said it could be a bad sign if someone has had many jobs in a short time or does not seem excited about the position. Passion and commitment are important for success.
Overall, Cabral hopeed the new athletic director will continue improving the program and focus on better communication. He said the ideal person would be organized, involved, and ready to help whenever needed.
