Mailyn Calderon Romero is a Greeley West sophomore who is known around the school for supplying others with sweet treats and delicacies.
Calderon Romero is a girl who has always enjoyed the baking process and watching baking shows. Calderon Romero started her journey by cooking.” I’ve always seen videos of people cooking, like shows, and I liked cooking. Then I tried baking. I started when I was around 11,” she said.
At the end of eighth grade, around Valentine’s Day, Calderon Romero started her business by selling homemade baked goods. Mailyn’s menu currently consists of cakepops, chamoy-covered gummies, and frosting-covered pretzels, as well as cookies on occasion. Calderon Romero pays close attention to her buyers and what they like, and makes sure she fits her clients’ expectations when selling.”I try to see what’s more popular and people, and try to see if I can make it, and see what people recommend me to do.” Calderon Romero stated.
When Calderon Romero was first starting out, she was often helped by her mother until she became more skilled and accustomed to the process and perfected her menu.
Calderon Romero’s business can be time-consuming.”I start at 6 and end at 10 or 11.” she stated. Calderon Romero’s schedule consists of going home after school, completing any school work, then getting to baking for 4-5 hours.
Calderon Romero’s business does change with the seasons. During the “off” season, Calderon sells her usual delicacies, but during Valentine’s season, the business takes off. During the month of February, Calderon Romero highlights chocolate-covered strawberries with special designs for her customers.
Calderon Romero also does deliveries during the season and makes a big profit off of doing so.“For Valentine’s Day, I always do chocolate-covered strawberries.”
Calderon Romero also has different prices for delivery and pickup. “I charge them a fee if I have to bring it to them, or no fee if they can pick it up.”
