The orchestra at Greeley West High School performed for an event unlike any other they have experienced before, taking center stage at one of the city;s most important civic events. Under the direction of Mr. Tom Nudent, the group was selected to perform at Greeley’s State of the City address which highlighted their talent and the role of students in the community.
According to Nugent, the opportunity came directly from the city directly from Greeley. Officials, “reached out to our school specifically,” he explained.
For the performance itself, the orchestra put together an impressive body of work, having practiced all year for moments like these. The programs spent 20 minutes highlighting pieces from composer Sibelius and more, showcasing their technical skill and connection with the music.
What makes this opportunity even more special is that West was that, “Greeley West is actually the only school selected to perform,” Nugent noted.
This event is for the State of the City address which is a major event where the mayor discusses important initiatives, projects, and the future of Greeley. There is a huge crowd filled with opportunities as city officials and council members have the honor to hear the orchestra play. “With it also being the celebration of Greeley’s 140th birthday, the performance places these students on a much larger and meaningful stage,” Nugent explained.
Compared to past performances, this event stands out significantly. While the orchestra has performed at school concerts and traditional events before, they have never played in a huge public setting to represent not only the school but the community as well. For many students, this marks a huge milestone moment, where they themselves blend music, community, and civic pride until a new experience.
