This week is the last opportunity for Greeley West students to donate to the Hygiene Drive being put on by the Student Council.
Members of the Student Council came around to advisory classes and presented this idea, with hopes of getting students to donate. Each advisory class has assigned items, like shampoo and conditioner, non-alcoholic mouthwash, toothbrushes, lotion, denture products, and much more.
Ms. Lea Sanford, who is the STUCO teacher, stated, “The Samaritan House is the only homeless shelter in Greeley that does long term, and short term shelter, which is a really great thing. Part of what the shelter provides is free hygiene items, meaning they’re always in need of those items, and will accept as much as they can get.”
It is important for Greeley West students to bring in items to donate, some advisories have done better than others, but participation is growing. What helped was the posts to social media and announcements in the morning, as well as during the last assembly.
Cody Gesick and Diana Kudu had the opportunity to visit the Guadalupe Center, and speak to someone who works there about what they do for the community, and what their facility consists of. They learned that the hygiene drive is a project through UNC as an attempt to collect hygiene items for the people who are at the shelter.
Cody Gesick stated, “We went there to see what it looked like and how it was set up to better understand how to help.”
The facility recently expanded, meaning they are able to house and help more people, but with that comes the need for more resources, specifically hygiene items. This is where the students of Greeley West are needed, and the advisory class that donates the most items gets coffee and donuts as a reward.
