West sophomore Isaiah Daniel Gallegos spent his summer coaching Little League baseball.
Gallegos’ passion for baseball started with his older brother, Adrian Gallegos.“It all started with my brother. That’s why I like it.” Gallegos said.
Gallegos enjoys helping those who need it, especially when it comes to coaching. “I’ve always been passionate about coaching, I really enjoy helping people and giving advice and stuff,” Gallegos said.
Gallegos’ dad is the head coach for a recreational baseball league. He explained that his dad needed help, so Gallegos took this opportunity to help coach. “He kinda said that any help he could get would be beneficial, so I decided to help,” Gallegos said.
Gallegos explained that he began to assist his dad around the second week of June. He and his dad coached little kids around the age of 8-9.
Another reason why Gallegos chose to coach was also because his younger brother, Tobias Gallegos, was going to be in the baseball league. His dad originally coached Gallegos’ brother, so he wanted to take after his father. “Tobias needed help, so I took it upon myself to help him learn.” Gallegos said.
Gallegos enjoyed coaching this summer, especially because he got to know the kids he coached. “ I really liked to help the little kids learn about the sport and why they want to learn it,” Gallegos said. Another reason why he enjoyed coaching was that it helped him, too, since when he was around their age, he struggled, too. “I guess I wasn’t the best of kids, so helping the little kids helped me.”
Gallegos explained that they went undefeated the whole season. “Throughout the season we went undefeated,” Gallegos said. To celebrate their wins, they had a banquet with the team. The season concluded at the end of July.
Antonio Millan, Gallego’s friend, also helped coach. Millan mentioned that Gallegos has what it takes to be a coach. “He was a really good coach. He was bonding with the kids a lot. Isaiah was mature, but he still brought humor with him to practices. He was always on time, too.” Millan said.
