The University of Northern Colorado Environmental Science department invited the Greeley West UNC Environmental Science class onto campus to drive up interest in their clubs and programming last week.
On October 2nd, the UNC group hosted the “Weld County Youth Environmental Summit,” where Greeley West students learned a lot about different careers that involve environmental science and many environmental clubs at UNC.
Junor Nick Roberts said his favorite part of the field trip was “seeing how invested college students are in the clubs they participate in and how they know so much of a wide variety, but still so specific.”
For junior Isaiah Parker, the field trip provided an opportunity to look at his future and if there were jobs that aligned with his passions. “This was a great opportunity to see all the different kinds of environmental majors at UNC, and to see what their lives could look like in the future if they choose to go to UNC,” Parker explained.
Parker said talking to people in the actual field was enlightening. “We walked around talking to a bunch of people at tables that were all environmental based but each table was more specific on a certain job and that environmental aspect. One of the tables that we went to was a lady representing the Earth Guardians who work together around the world to help the Earth,” Parker said.
Junior Carlos Mascarenas was most interested in sustainability. “I learned more about the environment and the aspects that go into that, including water, trash, and other environmental aspects.”
Mascarenas said, “It was a split between learning about environmental classes you could take at UNC and the other half was just about UNC progression but it was mostly environmental.”
