Greeley West AVID juniors had the opportunity to take a college tour of the University of Colorado Colorado Springs to see what the campus looks like and different aspects it has. On the way back they also went to IKEA.
Lots of students expressed how they liked the opportunity of touring UCCS. Some of the aspects they enjoyed were how pretty the university was and how they liked how it was a smaller campus. Junior Sophie Herold stated, “It’s a smaller school so there were different aspects like the residential halls rather than dorms. It’s always exciting to see life on campus and what college life looks like,” Herold stated.
Students enjoyed touring the campus with their AVID class and spending time with each other. Also, just seeing what the classrooms look like and learning opportunities that the school has. A highlight for junior Zuri Venegas was being able to see the students walk around the campus. Venegas stated, “It was also nice to see UCCS students walking around campus and made me look forward to being one of them.”
On the way back to West, they stopped at IKEA. They were challenged to go to IKEA and decorate a dorm how they would after seeing one. Science and AVID teacher Mr. Zachary Armstrong came up with this concept. Armstrong stated, “What we were specifically looking at was once you’ve seen a dorm room, now you have to furnish it.”
AVID students really enjoyed this activity because it allowed them to have a realistic idea of what furniture and decor would look like in the dorm. It was also social studies and AVID teacher Ms. Izbeth Pacheco’s first time at IKEA.
