The week before Thanksgiving break, teachers had the opportunity to sign up for the Angel Tree program, and participate with their advisory class.
It was a tradition for Key Club to bring the Angel Tree program to West each year, but ever since the new campus has been built, it hadn’t happened, until this year. The new sponsor of Key Club, as of this year, is Mrs. Brenda Walker, and thanks to her, Greeley West got to continue the tradition this year.
During mid-November, Walker reached out to the Salvation Army, who is in charge of the Angel Tree program, to get the cards with the children’s lists and some extra information about them, but they keep it as anonymous as possible. Shortly after she had received the cards from the Salvation Army, Walker sent out an email to teachers to let them know that they had the option to do this good deed with their advisory class.
The veteran teachers are familiar with this program, so they know the Angel Tree process, and were more than happy to participate. Walker only got 50 cards, and all 50 of them were claimed.
“I had to turn teachers away by the time it was all said and done,” Walker stated.
The hope was that the students would get the majority of the gifts that were on the card, and exactly that happened. They were more than happy to participate, and do something kind for someone who deserves it.
Juniors, Kade Belcher and Katherine Tran both got gifts for their “Angel.” They got her new clothes, socks, blankets and more. They wanted to give the little girl a good Christmas, and be able to enjoy the Christmas spirit.
Tran stated, “I would do it again next year, they deserve to have a good Christmas no matter their situation.”
