While many students enjoyed their day off on Friday, March 6, members of the Greeley West High School Student Council spent their time helping younger students grow as leaders. Greeley West’s STUCO hosted a leadership event for 7th and 8th graders from local middle schools, giving them the opportunity to learn important skills and connect with high school students.
The event focused on developing leadership skills that students can use in everyday life. Throughout the day, middle school students participated in activities and group discussions made to strengthen skills such as communication, failure management, and assembly planning.
According to STUCO member Janice Bercian, the event allows students to actively practice these skills rather than just hear about them. “We worked on communication, learning how to handle failure and planning,” Bercian said. “The activities helped the students understand how those skills are used when you are leading others.”
Students were divided into groups where they worked together to solve problems, share ideas, and reflect how leaders can create change. These groups were in sessions encouraging collaboration.
STUCO member Karla Chavarria explained that many of the activities were designed to help students think about ways they can impact their own schools. “We had group time where students talked about how to improve their skills actively,” Chavarria said.
Chavarria also noted that this year’s event benefited from experience gained in the past from last year.
Overall, the leadership day was a success for both the middle schools and the Greeley West STUCO members who organized it.
